Safety Stall System
Designed to Reduce the Risk of a Horse Getting Cast
The Safety Stall is a purpose-designed equine housing system developed to reduce the risk of a horse becoming cast in the stall—a dangerous situation where a horse rolls too close to a wall or fence, becomes trapped, and is unable to regain its footing.
What “Getting Cast” Means
When a horse rolls in a traditional stall, its legs can pass through open fencing or bars. If the horse becomes wedged against the wall or divider, it may be unable to push itself away, leading to panic, injury, or prolonged entrapment without human intervention.
How the Safety Stall Works
The defining feature of the Safety Stall is the mid-height solid panel integrated into the stall divider fencing.
Key Safety Function
The mid-panel blocks a horse’s legs from fully passing through the divider
This significantly reduces the chance of a horse becoming trapped during rolling
Secondary Safety Benefit
If a horse does manage to partially extend a leg through the upper fencing:
The solid mid-panel provides a firm surface
The horse can push against the panel to reposition itself
This self-rescue capability helps the horse return to a safe standing or lying position
In contrast to fully open fencing, the Safety Stall eliminates the “void” space that causes cast incidents.
Shown Configuration: Two-Stall Safety Section
The image shown illustrates a two-stall Safety Stall section, demonstrating how the system functions both as:
Individual safety stalls
A connected stall layout using shared safety dividers
This approach allows safety features to be applied consistently across multiple stalls without sacrificing modularity or layout flexibility.
Standard Sizes Shown
12′ × 24′ Safety Stall
Traditional extended stall footprint
Suitable for general housing, training, and turnout-style stalls
Enhanced safety compared to standard open-divider stalls
24′ × 24′ Safety Stall
Oversized safety configuration
Ideal for rehabilitation, broodmares, stall rest, or high-value horses
Maximizes movement while maintaining cast-reduction protection
Modular Sizing & Layout Flexibility
As with the other stall systems, the Safety Stall is not limited to fixed dimensions. Using modular panels and posts, the system can be configured into:
Various stall widths and lengths
Single or multi-stall runs
Back-to-back or linear layouts
Custom safety zones within larger barns
This allows facilities to apply safety stall principles selectively or universally, depending on horse type, risk level, or management preference.
Designed for Horse Welfare & Facility Confidence
The Safety Stall is especially beneficial for:
Horses prone to rolling or casting
Rehabilitation and recovery stalls
Broodmares and foaling environments
Facilities seeking to reduce emergency interventions
